Prevention

Prevention programming that fits real schedules

Chronic disease prevention competes with shift work, caregiving, and transportation. Program timing is a design decision.

Prevention programming asks people to give up time they may not have. Walking groups, screening events, and wellness workshops all compete with hourly shifts, caregiving, second jobs, and bus schedules. When attendance is low, the timing is usually the first thing to examine.

Design around existing gatherings

The lowest-friction prevention programming attaches to something already happening: a congregation service, a school pickup window, a food distribution day, a tenant association meeting, a shift change at a large employer. Amana Healthcare works with partners to place activities inside those windows rather than asking people to add a new trip.

  • Offer the same session at two different times, including one outside business hours.
  • Co-locate with a service people are already traveling for.
  • Keep sessions short and repeatable rather than long and singular.
  • Provide clear information about location, duration, and cost up front.

Read attendance as feedback

Attendance patterns describe constraints. A session that fills on Saturday morning and empties on Wednesday afternoon has answered a scheduling question. Reviewing those patterns with partners every cycle turns routine record-keeping into program design.

Prevention is an access problem before it is a motivation problem.
